Ground beef 1 pound
Thinly sliced potatoes 4 cups
Onion, chopped 1
Garlic, minced 2 cloves
Shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup
Milk 1 cup
All-purpose flour 2 tablespoons
Butter 2 tablespoons
Salt 1 teaspoon
Black pepper 1/2 teaspoon
Paprika 1/2 teaspoon
Step 1: Preparing the Ground Beef
Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned and no longer pink. Make sure to break up the meat into small pieces as it cooks. Once the beef is cooked, drain any excess fat from the skillet.
Step 2: Sautéing the Onion and Garlic
In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion turns translucent and the garlic becomes fragrant. This should take about 5 minutes. The combination of onion and garlic will add a wonderful aroma and depth of flavor to the casserole.
Step 3: Creating the Cheese Sauce
Next, it’s time to prepare the cheese sauce. In a small saucepan, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Gradually whisk in the flour until smooth, creating a roux. Cook the roux for about 1 minute, stirring constantly. This will help cook out the raw flour taste.
