The cherry tree is a fruit plant that is popular for its tasty red and juicy fruits. There are many techniques for growing a cherry tree plant by propagation. Skilled gardeners attach importance to a special technique that should make the work easier even for people with little manual skills or good gardening knowledge.
How do you grow a cherry tree? The techniques of industry professionals.
Before starting the propagation process of growing a cherry tree, it is important to prepare the soil and make sure that it is suitable for the growth of new plants. The cherry tree prefers well-drained soils that are rich in organic matter. Make sure the soil is well fertilized and tilled to provide the new plants with all the nutrients they need for healthy growth.
Cherry plant propagation can be done using various techniques, such as transplanting cuttings or using grafts. In this article, we will focus on the technique of latent bud grafting, which is one of the most common.
Cherry tree
To get started, you’ll need to collect the necessary materials. You’ll need a healthy cherry branch, a cherry tree rootstock, and a clean, sharp knife. Make sure that the material of both plants is free of diseases or pests.
Once you have the materials ready, do the following:
Choose a young, healthy branch with well-developed buds that you can use as grafting material. Make sure that the branch is not too young or too old, ideally it should be about 6-8 millimeters thick and about 10-15 centimeters long;
Take the cherry tree rootstock and use a sharp knife to make a “T” cut in the shell, just above the ground. Make sure the cut is clean and precise;
Take the selected branch and cut it off to get a dormant bud with a small proportion of the wood from the previous year. Make sure the bud is well developed and free of any damage or signs of disease:
Carefully tuck the bud under the bark of the rootstock, making sure to position it correctly so that it adheres well to the wood. Make sure the yolks are completely covered by the crust;
Wrap graft tape around the graft site to protect it and keep it secure. Make sure the band is wrapped tightly, but not wrapped in a way that squeezes the gemstone;
After the transplant is complete, protect the graft area from damage or interference. You can do this by placing a plastic cone or a cut plastic bottle over the graft.
Water the plants regularly to keep them moisturized and promote root formation.
How long does it take for the plant to develop?
After about 3–4 weeks, you should start to notice signs of growth in the grafted plant, such as the formation of new buds or leaves. This indicates that the grafting was successful and the plant is growing well.
Growing a cherry tree
It is important to note that the process of propagating cherry plants requires time and patience. It may take a few years for the new plants to reach full maturity and begin to bear fruit. However, with proper care and maintenance, you can enjoy rich cherry production in your garden.
